New Asphalt Driveway – Lawerenceville, GA

July 3, 2020 //  by Samuel

Specifications:

  • Removal of Pre-Existing Concrete
  • Ensure Water Flows Away from Garage
  • 2″ Application of Hot-Mix Asphalt (Fully Compacted)

Description:

  1. Demolish and removed existing concrete
  2. Stabilize and grade sub-base (clay)
  3. Add and grade base (gravel)
  4. Apply hot-mix asphalt
  5. Haul away any remaining garbage materials

Challenges:

Demolition and removal of existing materials around a garage, or any building for that matter, can be a challenge for any experienced team. Our team utilized not only our experience, but our specialized equipment to make this tall task seem effortless. We were able to demolish and remove the pre existing asphalt around the customer’s garage without any damage to the building, both inside and out. We then graded the existing sub-grade (clay) to ensure the water flows away from the garage. This allowed us a stable sub-base for our gravel application. Once the gravel was applied over the sub-grade, we ensured that there was an appropriate amount of fall away from the garage to ensure water would flow properly. This base was then compacted with a roller to ensure stability for the asphalt application. The asphalt was then applied. Our team used all of our resources available to ensure a clean and quality application. We finished the job by loading all of the garbage concrete, as well as, any of our remaining materials from the job site.

Challenges:

Our team at Spalding Concrete take pride in being able to tackle even the most daunting of tasks.  This particular project tested our expertise by providing us with 2 major challenges to over come. The first challenge was the creation and execution of a drainage ditch to control the flow of run-off water on the driveway.

Our team, through use of creative thinking and know how, made short work of this task. We used a combination of heavy equipment and man power to dig out the drainage area and fill it with a combination of surge and baby surge stone to assist in controlling the flow of water on the project. This task was taken to the next level by use of man power, arranging the stones in a decorative manner by hand, taking step towards careful placement of every stone to provide an aesthetically pleasing and fully functional end result.

The second, and more common, hurdle this project provided was a steep hill that required a hot-mix application. This task, being one of the more common obstacles faced by our team, was taken in stride. We formulated a “game plan” for compaction to ensure a safe and effective means of finishing the asphalt was reached. This method required constant vigilance and use of the gas powered plate-tamp to break down the asphalt, providing a safe and even surface to finish by use of a combination of 2 and 3 ton rollers. This method allowed for a smooth even finish on the asphalt, while accounting for the dangers of paving on a steep hill resulting in customer satisfaction and utmost safety of all of the Spalding Concrete employees.

  4. Add GAB to all just areas and grade, maintaining customer specifications
  5. Apply Hot0mix asphalt to Graded areas
  6. Tie-in to existing asphalt road

Challenges:

Our talented team has graded and paved many an existing driveway. This was not the case. Our team had to combine our talents and experience to provide this customer with a brand new driveway and parking pad to his specifications, where no existing path or driveway existed. Once the customer approved of the dimensions and look of the new driveway, we combined our talents and experience and got to work.

Our equipment and operators made short work of the grass and topsoil in both the new path and the parking pads. Our operators were also sure to stay within the specified dimensions and were aware of the remainder of the customer’s yard. This ensured the customer was going to get the driveway he needed, as well as, keeping his yard in the pristine condition it was in prior to our arrival.

Once the subgrade was leveled and compacted, we began hauling in some GAB to begin preparations for asphalt installation. Once the gravel was spread, we began checking pitch for appropriate water flow. This was achieved through use of levels, skid steers, and our expert operators. This led to compaction of the base and the driveway was ready for asphalt.

We painted guide lines for our spreader operators and once the asphalt process began, our talented ground crew ensures straight edges, and level asphalt. This was then compacted and cooled to ensure a smooth, even finish. We were able to clean up and leave this job site with yet another satisfied customer.

Challenges:

Our expert crew at Spalding Concrete works tirelessly to help all of our customers tackle any problems they have regarding our field. This particular customer had a very specific issue they needed our expertise to tackle; water flow and control. The beautiful lake house, built about mid way down a hill, had many issues with water flooding through their yard during rain. This problem was mainly due to run off from the existing driveway. With a clear goal in mind our team brainstormed with the customer for the best possible solution to the problem.

The solution was clear and dual purposed. We were going to pave a new path through a wooded area, around the yard. This path designed to not only catch the water run off from the existing drive way and direct it to the existing drainage ditch set up by the customer, but it would also allow the customer to drive down to their dock for some much deserved swimming and fishing. Once the solution was in sight, our team got to work.

With over 40 years of experience on site, grading the subgrade to the correct pitch was a simple task. This opened up the area for GAB and laid the ground work for easy grading to prepare for paving. Once all the GAB was applied and graded, our team added additional base material, Baby-Surge, in some areas that seemed as though needed some additional help for water flow and control.

Once ready, our team began the paving process. The biggest challenge during this process was the installation of asphalt curbs. We needed to ensure the height and lets of the curbs were appropriate to catch as much run off as possible in order to direct flow towards a pre-existing drainage ditch. With the asphalt and curbs installed and throughly compacted, we were able to clean up and leave the site with yet another satisfied customer.
